I open my closet in the morning to get dressed, and more often than not, I say to myself:
“I have nothing to wear”.
Ever have this problem? It seems like there are so many awesome pieces of clothing, but nothing that appeals to me, nothing that fits the occasion, or the weather.
Despite my trouble with finding something trendy to wear, I want to share with you some fashion necessities. Things that can be worn every day, that never go out of style.
As children of God, we are special and have specific purposes. We are set apart from other people, we are dearly loved and made holy. What does holiness look like?
In Colossians 3:12, Paul says:
“Clothe yourselves with a holy way of life: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience”.
I think its interesting that Paul says to put on the clothes of holiness. Compassion Trousers, Kindness Shoes, Jewelry of Patience. There is a physical “putting on” of clothes right? We start out without any clothes on, and we end up looking trendy, coordinating color, cut and fit. Just like we put our clothes on, the idea here is to “wear” these qualities like clothing.
I don’t know about you, but I like to dress up. I appreciate when people comment on my outfit because it took time and energy for me to put it together! Its nice to be noticed, to stand out from the crowd.
So in addition to our physical clothes, what if we put on the “holy clothes”? What if we wore them so well that people noticed? What if we became trendsetters of hoy fashion? I think this is what Paul is talking about. Wearing the qualities of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, all so that others will be inspired to wear them too.
Paul goes on to list a few more things that we should wear: forgiveness, peace and thankfulness. And he says:
“But above all these, put on love! Love is the perfect tie to bind these together”.
Love is like that finishing touch on today’s look. The perfect handbag, or your shiny watch. Love is what first draws the attention of others to want to see more. Love is the statement piece.
So when you’re thinking about what to wear in the morning, think about what it means to put on holiness. How can I be humble today? How can I be kind today?
How can I wear love so that when others look at me they see a picture of Jesus?
